'people mocked me, said women play underarm cricket'
India, Nov. 20 -- Celebrations for India's historic cricket World Cup win on November 2 are still going strong! And one smile that beams brightest with pride is that of former cricketer Jhulan Goswami. The winning team's vice captain Smriti Mandhana dedicated this victory to "Jhulan didi", and the team also did a lap of honour, meeting the veteran as well as former cricketers Mithali Raj and Anjum Chopra - legends credited for shaping women's cricket in the country.
Reflecting on the moment when the team had her lift the trophy, Jhulan says emotionally, "The girls made every Indian feel that we were a part of the winning moment... We have come close to winning the World Cup twice in the past, but this time they kept their promise and made that dream a reality."
The 42-year-old chose this sport as a profession at a time when women's teams weren't taken seriously. "Back then, there was no fan following for women's cricket. Our matches got live coverage only once a year. And people would mock me with stupid questions like, 'Do women play underarm cricket?' We had no sponsors. But what kept me going was the country's name on my jersey," Jhulan shares, adding, "Things changed once the BCCI took over (the team)."
Now, the veteran has met actor Salman Khan on a reality show. Earning congratulations from him for this victory, Jhulan confesses, "was really nice". "All the hard work put in by our seniors as well as the current team is bearing fruit now," she ends....
