India, Oct. 26 -- Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs seen in women of all ages, but they are most common during the reproductive years. The frequently encountered types include functional cysts, dermoid cysts, endometriomas, and cystadenomas. While adolescents may develop ovarian cysts, most are detected in women aged 20-50 Small, functional cysts often resolve with observation and medical management, particularly in younger, premenopausal women without concerning symptoms or abnormal imaging. It's of concern when pain, abnormal menstrual patterns, any sudden onset of symptoms are seen. Hormonal medications may help prevent recurrence in select cases. Surgery is advised when cysts persist, are larger than 5cm, produce significant pain, or show suspicious features suggestive of malignancy, especially in postmenopausal women. Factors which lead to the switch from medical to surgical management include increasing size, severe symptoms, failure to resolve on follow-up scans, and high-risk features on ultrasound or blood markers.
