'our show's success still surprises me'
India, Aug. 5 -- Upon its release in 2022, supernatural mystery series Wednesday became a global phenomenon, one that catapulted Jenna Ortega into the limelight.
Speaking to us before part one of season 2 drops tomorrow, the actor admits that the show's virality was "very unexpected." Jenna, who was 18 when production first began, tells us, "Oftentimes, you take these jobs and never know what will come of them, or if anyone will watch them. So, the excitement for what we worked on is something that still surprises me."
Based on Charles Addams' popular Addams Family series, the show saw Jenna play the morbid Wednesday Addams, a teen with a fascination for the macabre. Now 22, the actor reflects on the sudden fame that came with being the face of the wildly popular Netflix show: "It's such a pleasure; you hope you're able to connect with people when you do these things and that it matters to someone." On a personal level, she adds, "It's been a great change, one that takes getting accustomed to. It's [been] interesting finding the balance - it's a learning curve."
The Addams Family has been part of pop culture since the '60s, but this iteration brought the deadpan Wednesday to a younger audience. "It's been funny to see girls with colourful and expressive personalities try on eyeliner for the first time or try not to smile or people at parties be very Wednesday-like," notes Jenna. Ask if she relates to her character and pat comes the reply: "I feel like I kind of have the same outlook [as Wednesday]. I'm a very sarcastic and nihilistic person, too."...
