India, Nov. 8 -- Actor Kalyani Priyadarshan's Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra broke new grounds in Malayalam cinema, becoming the highest grossing film in the language and India's first female superhero film. On its digital release, she says,"I feel honoured that we made a film that sparked conversations and drew audiences to theatres multiple times," she says. Ask about the growing love for the superhero genre in India, and she says, "The genre hadn't taken off earlier because our heroes were superheroes already. They defy gravity and do things beyond human limits. We've never called them superhero films, we made them heroes. In Malayalam industry, grounded realism allowed us to make the action believable, which is why this story works as a superhero film." Revealing the biggest fear before Lokah's release, Kalyani shares, "Our concern was that as a female superhero film, there was nothing to compare it to here. Comparisons would be made with international films with 20-30 times our budget and we may not come close. I was cautious in early interviews where I kept saying this is not Avengers, and my character isn't Wonder Woman. It's nice to see that the comparison was made in a positive light." Does Kalyani want to explore comedy, the genre her father, filmmaker Priyadarshan is known for? "I grew up watching comedies and have always been drawn to them. I want to be good at it and will keep learning my limitations," she says....
