'Didn't make remarks against any Sikh Guru': Atishi responds to notice
New Delhi, Jan. 20 -- In a letter responding to a Delhi assembly privileges committee notice, AAP leader and leader of Opposition Atishi on Monday denied she had made derogatory remarks against any Sikh Gurus and demanded an unedited video recording of the official house proceedings be provided to her.
"At the outset, I state with utmost clarity that I have never made any derogatory remark against Sikh Gurus, either in the House or at any other point of time in my life. I categorically deny the allegation in its entirety," Atishi told the committee examining the matter.
The controversy began during a scheduled discussion on the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur on January 6. BJP MLAs accused Atishi of using "insensitive words" in connection with the Sikh Guru.
The AAP, however, denied the allegations. Delhi assembly speaker Vijender Gupta referred the matter to the committee on privileges that had initiated proceedings against Atishi and requested a written reply by January 19. Atishi further said she came from a family where reverence for Sikh gurus was not a matter of "political posture but of lived values and deep personal faith".
"At no point were Sikh Gurus referred to, invoked or alluded to in any manner whatsoever," she added.
Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor urged the speaker to suspend Atishi from Delhi assembly till she tendered an unconditional apology.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler on Monday demanded a probe, alleging criminal conspiracy by the Punjab Police to save Delhi leader of Opposition Atishi by securing a "false report" from the Forensic Science Laboratory, Mohali, at the instance of chief minister Bhagwant Mann.
Addressing a press conference here, Kler said it was shocking that the CM had decided to shield Atishi instead of demanding action against her. "It is even more shocking that the Jalandhar police were used for this cover up by securing a report from the FSL, Mohali, to state that the video was tampered with," he alleged.
Kler said the lie of the Jalandhar police had been nailed with the Delhi speaker presenting a conclusive report to prove the video was genuine and not tampered with at all.
He also questioned what jurisdiction Punjab Police had in the matter as the incident occurred in Delhi....
