Vijay's Jana Nayagan cleared by UK censor board for release, amid CBFC hurdles in India
India, Jan. 8 -- A
s the team behind actor-politician Vijay's upcoming film, H Vinoth's Jana Nayagan, seeks clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India ahead of its scheduled release on January 9, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has already cleared the film for release in the UK.
The BBFC rated Jana Nayagan '15' for "strong bloody violence, injury detail, sexual violence references". A part of the BBFC's description read, "The film deals with themes of terrorism, including depictions of terrorist attacks and their aftermath. Bereavement and grief are portrayed following deaths. There are scenes depicting racial discrimination, including a militia group firing at targets labelled 'Indians.' References are made to terrorist groups planning attacks, and villains attempting to create division based on race, caste, and religion."
Meanwhile, in India, KVN Productions filed a petition in the Madras High Court this week to expedite the certification process. This came after the producers received an email on January 5 stating that the film had been forwarded to an examining committee, following a complaint alleging that the film "hurts religious sentiments".
The producers maintain that the censor board had already viewed the film on December 19 last year and verbally indicated it would be given a UA 16+ certificate. They also claim to have complied with the requested cuts and modifications. While the court questioned the urgency of releasing the film on January 9, it has asked the CBFC to submit the complaint causing the delay. The team now awaits a solution at the hearing in the Madras High Court on Wednesday. htc...
