Sunjay was helping Karisma, kids secure Portuguese citizenship
India, Sept. 12 -- The legal battle over Sunjay Kapur's estate took a turn on Wednesday. New documents submitted to the Delhi High Court claim that the late businessman was in fact assisting his second wife, actor Karisma Kapoor and their children, Samaira and Kiaan, in securing citizenship in Portugal.
Sunjay and Karisma were likely closer than believed; WhatsApp chats and other documents annexed to the court show that the two had regular, personal discussions about the matter.
One of the chats cited in the suit claims that Sunjay told Karisma she would have to give up her Indian citizenship to obtain a Portuguese passport, since India does not permit dual citizenship. The Delhi HC will review these documents as the proceedings continue - the next hearing is posted for October 9.
Karisma and Sunjay's children, Samaira (20) and Kiaan (15), recently approached the court, seeking a share in their late father's estate, which is estimated to be worth Rs.30,000 crore. They also accused Sunjay's widow and third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, of "forging" his will to exclude them from the inheritance.
During Wednesday's hearing, Priya's legal team had claimed the suit was not maintainable since Samaira and Kiaan were given assets worth Rs.1,900 crore from a family trust days before it was filed.
The legal feud began after a family meeting on July 30, where Priya presented a will allegedly executed on March 21. Samaira and Kiaan's suit alleges that the will was unregistered and hadn't been disclosed to them until the "hasty" reading during the meeting. Sunjay and Karisma were married from 2003 to 2016, and their two children were born in 2005 and 2011. Sunjay married Priya in 2017; the couple share a six-year-old son, Azarias.
Meanwhile, Justice Jyoti Singh has directed Priya to file her replies within two weeks and submit a list of all of Sunjay's assets. htc...
