Sip your way to immunity this monsoon
India, July 7 -- Viral infections spread rapidly during monsoon. Hence, it's crucial to focus on building a strong immune system to protect yourself. So whether it's grabbing a drink with office colleagues or weekend party scenes with friends, you can ensure that your mocktails have a healthy twist by opting for drinks with natural immunity-boosting ingredients. "My go-to option during this time of the year is the Monsoon Shield, a zesty, tropical immunity booster that comprises ginger, basil, orange and lime juice, and passion fruit," says Ravi Patel, executive bartender, The Westin Mumbai Garden City, Mumbai, adding, that the oranges have a vitamin C punch, ginger adds warmth and lime aids with immunity.
To make your mocktails, one doesn't need to look far or opt for expensive ingredients, as several pantry staples can be used to make delicious drinks. "Add ginger juice to citrus-based mocktails for its anti-inflammatory properties. It helps combat common cold and throat irritations during monsoon," explains Chandan Roy, food and beverage manager, Courtyard by Marriott, Ranchi, Jharkhand.
Another easy-to-find ingredient is tulsi - muddle a few leaves or infuse them, for a mocktail that's packed with antioxidant benefits. Pair it with pomegranate or apple juice for a brilliant blend. Mint is known for being a cooling ingredient and will ward off bacterial infections. It pairs well with lemon, cucumber or watermelon-based drinks, he adds.
Manish Chauhan, head beverages, Mamma Killa Delhi, swears by the Nikkei Fizz: "I use galangal that has well-known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and lemongrass as it aids digestion, boosts immunity and regulates cholesterol. Ginger boosts immunity and provides relief from cold and cough, and the base is a citrus-forward, floral blend with a tropical twist of apple and mango sorbet."
Citrus fruits are excellent for boosting the immune system due to their high vitamin C content, which is a powerful antioxidant that supports immune cell function. Rajib Maity, restaurant manager, Grand Mercure Bengaluru at Gopalan Mall, Bengaluru, says, "Our Citrus Splash Elixir is an immunity-boosting mocktail, which blends fresh orange and lemon, a touch of honey for natural sweetness, while offering antimicrobial and soothing benefits, long-valued in traditional remedies. A pinch of turmeric brings powerful anti-inflammatory properties, and the drink is finished with sparkling water and fresh mint."
Don't knock amla till you try it, as it is a potent source of vitamin C, excellent for enhancing resistance to colds and mint. "My two go-to drinks during monsoon are Golden Rain Tonic - a chilled brew of turmeric, ginger tea, amla juice, tulsi essence, and a dash of honey. The Basil Breeze Spritzer features lemongrass, tulsi and lemon zest, shaken with tonic water and topped with roasted cumin," says Chef Bidyut Saha, executive chef, Taj Corbett Resort & Spa, Uttarakhand....
