Shriya Pilgaonkar on breaking stereotypes around women in uniform
India, June 8 -- Having played a cop for the first time in her recently-released webseries, Shriya Pilgaonkar says the experience opened her eyes to society's perception of female officers. "Society looks at a male cop and a female cop differently because of its own inherent sexist biases," says the actor.
Noting how women in uniform are often depicted as masculine onscreen, she muses, "Taking up space as a woman - it's almost a defence mechanism that comes from years of conditioning."
What's different about her character in the show? "I like the fact that we kept my character's femininity. She is fine with being gentle. But she can be tough, too," the 36-year-old replies.
"There's no aggression for the sake of it. But women in historically male-dominated spaces tend to hold on to toughness to stay in power," she acknowledges....
