India, June 12 -- What should one do first, cardio or weight training? Fitness enthusiasts have long been debating this subject and while they don't have an exact answer, research might finally be able to shed some light. In a study published in the Journal of Exercise Science and Fitness, the order of your workout can affect how much fat you lose. Researchers found that those who did weight training before cardio significantly lost more fat. They also became physically more active throughout the day. In the study, 45 young men, who were classified as obese, were divided into three groups and observed. The control group continued their life, with no change but the rest had to exercise for 60 minutes, three times a week. Both groups got identical training, with the difference being the exercise sequence. Both groups did strength training with weights and a cardio session of 30 minutes of stationary cycling. The cardio-first group walked 1,600 steps, and the second group increased their daily step count by approximately 3,500 steps. Participants from both groups experienced improvements in their cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and body composition. But participants who lifted weights first experienced higher loss of fat. The reason is that resistance training depletes the sugar stored in the muscle, which acts as the body's quick-access fuel. When you lift weights first, you effectively drain this tank, and force the body to switch its energy sources. When you do cardio after lifting weights, your body relies on fat for its energy, which leads to more fat loss....
