India, March 30 -- As a bariatric surgeon practising in India, I've witnessed the alarming rise of obesity across all strata of society. Obesity is no longer a problem confined to the wealthy - it has spread across all sections of Indian society. Whether it's a middle-class office worker, a labourer in a small town, or a student in a village, unhealthy weight gain is a common issue. The changing lifestyle, rise in dependency on processed food, and lack of nutrition awareness has contributed to this alarming trend. According to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), nearly 24% of Indian women and 23% of men aged 15-49 are now overweight or obese. This is a sharp rise from previous years, highlighting that obesity is no longer just an urban phenomenon - it's spreading to rural areas too. Fast food, sedentary jobs, and limited access to nutritious food are fuelling this crisis, making weight-related diseases a ticking time bomb....
