India, Sept. 22 -- On Saturday, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced that Mohanlal would be conferred with India's top film honour, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Speaking to the media on Sunday in Kochi, the actor said, "The award is for the entire Indian film industry." The 65-year-old went on to add, "If you were to ask me what my social commitment is, I would say that it is to attempt to play the roles I am being given in the best possible manner. But you cannot do a movie alone; it is the work of many people. I pray that we get to make good movies and that good movies are made in the Malayalam industry. I just want to be a part of that." Earlier, the actor had taken to social media and shared that he was "deeply humbled" by the award. The Information Ministry announced the news on the official X handle; Prime Minister Narendra Modi and actors Mammootty and Akshay Kumar were among the first to send their congratulations.
