Less is more: The 3-wall rule for better living spaces
India, April 10 -- Walls do more than divide a room. Shaping narratives, showcasing stories, they define a room and its owner's personality. Often the first thing the eye lands on, walls set the tone for how a space feels and functions. While accent walls, textured finishes, or exposed brick can add depth, there's a simpler, less invasive way to transform interiors: thoughtful art placement.
Instead of overhauling walls, curating artworks with intention can create a strong visual impact with minimal effort. However, placement is key. According to Suumit Arora, founder of an interior design firm, the problem in many homes today isn't a lack of decor, but too much of it.
Living rooms packed with decorative pieces often end up looking cluttered rather than curated. While each artwork may stand strong on its own, grouping too many together can create visual "noise". Covering every surface from walls to shelves removes breathing space, leading to a lack of balance and a missing focal point.
Arora points out that this overcrowding disrupts the natural flow of a room. Instead of drawing attention, it overwhelms the eye. A single, well-chosen piece, on the other hand, can define the mood far more effectively.
To bring structure and harmony, Arora suggests the "3-wall rule", a simple principle to organise visual elements within a room.
In living rooms, place a statement piece above the sofa, with supporting artworks near windows or entrances. In bedrooms, anchor the space with a piece above the headboard, complemented by a secondary piece on the opposite wall.
Lighting and proportion also matter. Textured artworks respond best to soft, indirect light, while ideal sizing is about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath....
