India, May 4 -- With successful comedy franchises such as Khichdi, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, and Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, producer JD Majethia is synonomous with comedy. On World Laughter Day today, Majethia, who recently announced Khichdi 3, rues that comedies are going downhill in the industry. "The overall popularity of comedy has declined in our industry. You will find small gags and videos on social media, but the readiness to spend money to watch something [in theatres] has reduced. Unlike a few years earlier, you won't find any comedy that can become legendary today, and that is because we don't have a talented crop of writers and actors," he says. The 56-year-old adds, "Comedy is a challenging genre. In non-fiction, you have some amazing artistes such as Kapil Sharma, Sunil Grover and Kiku Sharda, but fiction is lacking. And in comedy, if you don't give the best, people won't watch. Khichdi still instils that faith in people that if these iconic characters come together, it will be for something special. Some storylines may falter, but you will end up laughing out loud." After Khichdi does he plan to make Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai into a film, considering the love it gets till date? "Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai ki film nahi banni chahiye. It could have been made earlier, but not now. It's too late to make a film on it. Having said that, I am not too sure, let's wait and watch," he responds. JD says that comedy is entirely dependent on how it connects with the audience, and it's not easy to win their unwavering loyalty: "Even with big stars, if one film does well, others might not. The Indian audience is such that even if a cricketer wins four world cups and then loses one match to Pakistan, they will remember that. So, you have to give them the best always."...
