Janaki vs State of Kerala director questions CBFC's objection to title
India, July 3 -- The makers of Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran-starrer Malayalam film Janaki vs State of Kerala have moved the Kerala High Court to overturn the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) decision to stall its release. The board has demanded a change in the film's title objecting to the use of Janaki as the name of a rape survivor, arguing that it is another name for the mythological figure Sita.
Speaking to us, director Pravin Narayanan opines that CBFC should look at the film from a different perspective: "It's such a common name... We are on the final stage of production; renaming the character at this stage is difficult for us. Janaki's name is used throughout the movie in both dialogues and visuals."
Film body Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) is also opposing the CBFC's demand. Joy Mathew, a member of AMMA's ad hoc committee, says, "From the films and people to even the government, we give names from our history and traditions. But the CBFC wants to change dialogues, even though most films carry names like Sita, Ram, Mohammad, George, etc. What a joke! Seems like an ego issue."...
