Mumbai, March 16 -- Right now, he is busy with the preparations for his ambitious venture, Udham Singh, that revolves around the life of freedom fighter, Shaheed Udham Singh. And although this is Shoojit Sircar's maiden tryst with the Indian freedom struggle, the National Awardwinning filmmaker - at one point - thought of putting Bhagat Singh's life on the big screen as well. "There are certain subjects that always stay with you. For example, not many know that I wanted to make a film on Bhagat Singh. But even then, Udham Singh was one subject, which I really wanted to explore as I was really amazed by it," says Sircar, whose film on Singh will see him teaming up with actor Vicky Kaushal. "We have seen many films based on the stories of various freedom fighters. But out of all of them, Shaheed Udham Singh is a mystery and continues to be one even now. The subject has been very close to my heart since [my] theatre days, when I visited Amritsar and went to Jallianwala Bagh in 1995. That was when I got inspired by his story. In fact, I wanted to make a film on Udham Singh since the time I moved to Mumbai (in 2001)," he shares. The October (2018) director says that Punjab and Kashmir have been his "most favourite subjects in terms of research and exploration". "That's why my first film, Yahaan (2005), was in based in Kashmir, and since then, I wanted to make a film that's got to do with Punjab. So, yes, you can say that Udham Singh has been with me for a long time. And now, I am very keen for people to see the way I look at Udham's life and story," says Sircar, adding that his film's shoot will be "very spread out" since there are a "lot of small elements" in it. It has been 14 years since Sircar's directorial debut, but he says "small ideas" still give him a kick. "I may have made multiple films with big names, but even now, small ideas keep me going. It could be a hardhitting idea in a short film, but such things keep my passion going and ensure that the filmmaker in me is alive," he says....
