Indian Chanel model Bhoomika Yadav goes viral, ignites diversity debate
India, April 4 -- A native of Raipur, Chhattisgarh, model Bhoomika Yadav is going viral after her agency's social media post sparked widespread discussion on diversity and celebrating 'dark-skinned' beauty. At 19, Bhoomika became the youngest Indian model to walk for Chanel, and on Thursday, her agency Nninjas Model Management shared her journey in detail on Instagram.
Born on January 27, 2006, with roots from Bihar, Bhoomika was discovered not in a metropolitan fashion hub, but reportedly on the streets of her hometown. Her ascent has been described as a direct challenge to traditional aesthetic standards.
"...A journey that would go on to challenge deep-rooted beauty norms in India," the agency wrote in their caption, adding, "She is a striking dark Indian beauty, often labeled as 'Kali' in a society where darker skin is still unfairly judged despite the reality that the majority of India reflects this complexion."
Despite these societal pressures, Bhoomika's career has moved at a lightning pace. According to the agency, she has already walked for Chanel three times and collaborated with American Vogue. Now based in Paris, she balances an international career between France, India, and the UK.
The agency also highlighted her temperament, sharing: "Grounded and self-aware, she believes life is full of opportunities and chooses not to engage in competition or jealousy. Her favourite comfort food remains simple dal chawal."
The post posed a provocative question to the industry: Is India truly ready to embrace the diversity that defines real India, or will it continue to prioritise conventional light-skinned beauty?...
