India, June 26 -- When we think of sun protection, the focus often rests on shielding our skin. But what about our scalp and hair? While it is equally sensitive, the scalp is often left exposed and vulnerable to the blazing sun. Prolonged sun exposure can leave it dry, flaky, parched and even inflamed. "A damaged scalp can negatively impact your hair, making it brittle, rough, and lifeless. It may become prone to breakage, and take on a dry, straw-like texture as its protein structure is compromised," explains Dr Shilpa Vora, adding, "In severe cases, this can lead to increased hair fall due to an unhealthy scalp environment." The scalp is particularly sensitive to the sun, especially in areas where the hair is parted, thinning, or tied. This is where a pre-sun hair oiling ritual can make all the difference. "A light layer of coconut-based hair oil creates a breathable, nourishing barrier and offers protection against harsh environmental elements," Dr Vora shares. She recommends lightly oiling your hair and scalp before stepping out and using a wide-brimmed hat or a scarf for added protection. Anti-inflammatory and rich in fatty acids, coconut-based oil penetrates the hair shaft to restore moisture. "If your scalp feels irritated, a gentle oil massage may soothe redness, before washing with a mild, sulfate-free shampoo," explains dermatologist Dr Veena Praveen. Pro tip: Following sun exposure, avoid using harsh hair products, especially if your scalp is irritated or if your hair feels unusually brittle....
