Fake reviews, real money: Samosa critics exposed
India, May 10 -- We rely on movie reviews to decide whether something is worth a watch, our time, and our money. But haven't there been times when you went to a theatre to watch a film basis a stellar review - only for it to be a disappointing experience?
The menace of paid reviews and paid content, where filmmakers and actors can literally buy praise, has been rampant in the film industry for quite some time now. While credible critics still put out movie reviews, there have been instances raising questions about their paucity. For instance, did you know that there are four categories of reviews - legacy publications, online portals, freelancers, and influencer-critics?
The rise of samosa critics - the 'fear' they inspire instead of commanding any 'respect' - has been destroying the very foundation of the industry. You may have even caught some of them in action on social media, where people criticise a trailer or teaser, only to change tracks a couple of days later and declare it to be "the best they have ever seen".
All this and more is explored by Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor, Lifestyle & Entertainment, in the hero segment of her show MiPhi presents The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, this week.
Episode 5 dropped on Friday across the YouTube channels of Hindustan Times, HT City, Hindustan, and Livemint, and didn't leave anything out - from HT's own official movie critic spilling the beans on the gifts some actors and filmmakers offer as temptations, to the pressure exerted over senior editors to 'sambhal lo' the reviews for their films. You will walk away from the episode having learnt all about the 3Ps - Paisa, Pressure, and Presents - used by certain people in the industry to influence opinions about their films.
A new episode of MiPhi presents The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra drops every Friday at 7pm across Hindustan Times, HT City, Hindustan, and Livemint's YouTube channels. Don't miss it!
