Experts decode the ultimate winter hair routine for all scalp types

s the crisp winter air rolls in, it's not just your skincare that needs an update; your hair deserves some love too. Often overlooked, hair care becomes especially crucial when the seasons change, as cold weather can leave locks dry, brittle, and lacklustre. Here's a detailed haircare routine to follow this winter:
"If you have an oilier scalp, you can wash your hair two to three times a week. Use a shampoo that has salicylic acid or a similar ingredient that cuts through the oil. If you have a drier scalp, consider shampooing less frequently, perhaps once a week, with hydrating shampoos," says Dr. Kiran Sethi, MD, and founder of Isya Aesthetics in New Delhi, adding, "Behentrimonium chloride is a great cationic agent that reduces frizz. Also, avoid too many surfactants, as they can dry out the strands."
You could invest in the priciest haircare products and no-heat stylers, but without proper nutrition, healthy locks aren't guaranteed, especially in winter. "High glycemic foods, processed foods, and fried foods can increase the amount of oil you secrete and worsen your scalp condition. So your diet has an impact," says Dr Kiran.
Rashi Chahal, nutritionist at La Femme, adds: "The scalp and skin depend heavily on the nutritional status of an individual. To fight hair dryness, include Omega-3 fatty acid in your diet. Good sources are flax seeds, walnuts, and chia seeds. To control frizz, take adequate protein, folic acid, and B-vitamins. Good sources are moong dal, lentils, and millets, and increase your water intake."
Winter can also bring the worst of both worlds: frizzy lengths and a sebum-soaked scalp. "To balance sebum production on the scalp, load your diet with antioxidants, specifically Vitamin A and zinc, found in pumpkin, sweet potato, and seeds," Rashi suggests.
