Do you really need to double cleanse in summer? Experts weigh in

s temperatures rise, your skincare routine needs a seasonal reset. Summer brings with it heat, humidity, and constant sunscreen use; factors that can easily throw your skin off balance. Enter double cleansing, a two-step method that's been gaining popularity for its deep-clean promise. But is it a must-have for summer skin or just another passing trend? We ask dermatologists to weigh in.
Cleansing is the first step in any skincare routine, aimed at removing impurities before applying other products.
Double cleansing, as the name suggests, involves a two-step process. "The first step involves an oil-based cleanser, which helps dissolve oil-based impurities like sebum and SPF. This is followed by a water-based cleanser that removes sweat, dirt, and any remaining residue," explains dermatologist Dr Anika Goel.
She adds that choosing the right products is crucial: opt for lightweight oils or balms for the first cleanse, followed by a gentle face wash suited to your skin type, such as gel-based formulas for oily skin or hydrating cleansers for dry and sensitive skin.
Skin and aesthetic expert Dr Akshita Bhan says that double cleansing can be particularly useful during the summer months.
"With increased sweating, oil production, and regular use of sunscreen, there is a higher chance of pore congestion if the skin isn't cleansed properly," she explains.
However, there's a caveat. Dr Akshita cautions that double cleansing is not for everyone. People with dry or sensitive skin, or those who don't use heavy products, may not need to double cleanse daily. Over-cleansing can, in fact, disrupt the skin barrier, leading to irritation or dehydration.
Both experts agree that if you do opt for double cleansing, it's best reserved for your nighttime routine and should be done using gentle, non-comedogenic products. Ingredients like niacinamide, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid can help maintain hydration and support the skin barrier.
