Chris Brown pleads not guilty to UK nightclub assault charges
India, July 13 -- A
merican R&B singer Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty to a set of assault charges during an appearance at London's Southwark Crown Court on Friday.
The charges are linked to an alleged nightclub brawl in London last year. The 35-year-old artiste formally denied charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon - reportedly a bottle - in a public place. These follow a previous plea of not guilty to a more serious charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. Currently on a global tour that kicked off in Amsterdam last month, Brown is out on bail set at £5 million (about Rs.57 crore). The singer spent nearly a week in the custody of UK police in May; he had been arrested at a luxury hotel in Manchester shortly after his arrival by private jet.
A judge has permitted Brown to continue touring, but under the conditions of his bail, he risks forfeiting the £5 million if he fails to appear for future court proceedings.
