India, July 15 -- In a tragic turn of events, stuntman Mohanraj, also known as Raju, died while performing a stunt on the sets of an upcoming Tamil film on Sunday. The accident occurred during the filming of a high-risk car stunt; the sequence was being filmed for filmmaker Pa Ranjith's Vettuvam which also stars Arya. In light of the incident, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has demanded that an FIR be filed against Ranjith. On Monday, the association issued a statement on X, part of which read, "Despite the industry's repeated wake-up calls, producers continue to compromise the lives of technicians and workers. The Vettuvam incident is yet another painful example of gross negligence for human life." According to local news outlets, Raju was filming a stunt with an SUV, which was supposed to launch off a ramp. However, the vehicle lost balance mid-air and crashed. Raju was pulled from the wreckage and given medical attention, but ultimately did not survive. AICWA president Suresh Shyamlal Gupta condemned the incident and made an urgent appeal to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. His list of demands included the immediate registration of an FIR against Ranjith and his production banner under sections dealing with criminal negligence leading to death. The association has also asked the producers to pay Mohanraj's family a compensation of Rs.1 crore and asked for a state-wide investigation of all film sets to identify and take strict action against producers who fail to follow safety norms.
