After years of being selective, Suraj Sharma says he now wants to do more

ith a debut as striking as the Academy Award-winning Life of Pi (2012), actor Suraj Sharma seemed poised for a prolific career. Yet, in the 14 years since, he has appeared in only 10 feature films, often with long gaps between projects. Two years after Gulmohar (2023), he is now seen in The Tempting Madness, which has been doing the rounds at film festivals.
"People are very angry at me," he laughs, when asked about his selective approach. "I have only tried to maintain a sense of self in all this. I've tried to be picky with my stories, and not just that, picky about the people I wanted to work with. Sometimes I've just been busy with scheduling. In some situations, it's just not been a fit."
He adds that he prefers not to juggle too many projects at once. "I've focused on the things I was already doing, instead of taking on so much that your heart is only half in it. But the goal for the next 10 years is to do more now, and try to get more stuff out," says Suraj.
The next decade, he hints, may also include direction. "Direction is a very tough thing compared to acting, because you're playing many parts on set, holding so many emotions, steering the ship. That's a tough cookie, right? The harder job is when you're not acting," he smiles....
