Adaptogens: Nature's stress-busters for your skin
India, Aug. 18 -- A
daptogens, derived from plants, help the body adapt to stress and promote balance - a concept rooted in traditional herbal medicine that's now gaining traction in modern skincare. Many have potent anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit skin health.
Inflammation underlies several skin conditions, from acne and eczema to psoriasis and ageing. It causes redness, swelling and irritation, contributing to premature ageing and impaired skin function. Incorporating plant-based adaptogens into skincare can help counter these effects.
Ashwagandha, for example, is known to lower cortisol, the primary stress hormone, which, when elevated, can worsen skin inflammation and trigger acne. Used in topical formulations or supplements, it may reduce inflammation and promote a clearer complexion.
Holy basil (tulsi) is celebrated for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, helping combat oxidative stress that accelerates skin ageing. Infused into skincare, it can soothe irritation and shield against environmental damage.
Reishi and chaga mushrooms, on the other hand, are rich in polysaccharides and beta-glucans and support the skin's immune response, boost hydration and reduce redness. In short, plant-based adaptogens tackle inflammation at its root, offering a holistic path to healthier, more resilient skin. Personally, I find them most effective in fresh, boiled or garnished form, not when cooked Punjabi-style!
