A tumultuous family history
India, Nov. 25 -- Born into a Punjabi family, Dharmendra married his first wife Prakash Kaur in 1954 when he was 19. They had four children: sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, and daughters Ajeeta and Vijeyta. Discovered in Punjab, he debuted in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and first paired with actor Hema Malini in 1970's Tu Haseen Main Jawaan, later starring together in over 40 films.
Their on-screen chemistry sparked off-screen romance, but Dharmendra's existing marriage and Hema's family opposition were major hurdles. As Bollywood's 'Dream Girl', Hema had suitors like actors Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra. Her parents fixed her marriage with Jeetendra.
Hema and Jeetendra admitted to not being in love and thus not completely wanting to get married, they agreed to it for their families.
When news of Hema's marriage broke, Dharmendra reportedly confronted her father at the venue. Hema's father asked him why was he "destroying" his daughter's life. The confrontation led Hema to address both her and Jeetendra's family, asking them for time to think things over. But Jeetendra's family left after giving her an ultimatum.
Dharmendra warned Hema against making a "big mistake" by marrying Jeetendra, and she jokingly asked him to marry her instead. While they didn't get married right away, Dharmendra did get insecure about their relationship, which led him to deal with it through alcoholism.
Eventually, in 1980 they decided to get married but under the law, Dharmendra couldn't have a second marriage while already having a first wife. As Prakash Kaur refused a divorce, Dharmendra and Hema reportedly converted to Islam to get married, a claim that never verified.
They welcomed two daughters- Esha and Ahana Deol. But it wasn't a conventional marriage as Hema decided not to stay with Dharmendra and had him live with his first wife and family. There was friction between the two families for years, but in recent years, they expressed warmth and love for each other....
