A chocolatey hazelnut spread that's out of this world?
India, April 9 -- A jar of Nutella floated into the spotlight during the Artemis II mission, becoming the farthest-travelled branded food item from Earth. As NASA's Orion spacecraft reached 252,752 miles (shattering the record set during Apollo 13), the hazelnut spread made a surprise cameo on the global livestream on Monday.
The viral moment came just four minutes before the milestone, when the jar was spotted drifting across the cabin. The perfectly framed shot featured the label facing the camera in front of millions of viewers, even as mission specialist Christina Koch was busy with navigation tasks.
Clips circulating across social media saw speculation of product placement and guerrilla marketing. However, NASA Press Secretary Bethany Stevens has clarified that the agency does not accept brand partnerships, adding that the jar was simply part of the crew's personal food supply.
