India, Dec. 20 -- When Argentine footballer Lionel Messi wrapped up his India tour earlier this week, packed stadiums and ticket prices stretching into lakhs painted a striking contrast to the state of Indian football. For FC Goa defender Sandesh Jhingan, the spectacle sparked mixed emotions. "What this tells me is that we do love the sport, but perhaps not enough to support our own players," he wrote on Instagram on Thursday. Speaking to us, the 32-year-old shares, "In India, most clubs are on the brink of dissolving. Indian football needs unity. Otherwise, when the league shuts down, we'll all realise what we've lost." Jhingan also points to a deeper issue in Indian football culture: "Those at the Messi tour will hardly watch a national team game. If you can spend Rs.2-3 lakh on a match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, but hesitate to spend Rs.5000 to watch Indian football, that difference needs to be spoken about."...
