'There's more flexibility in roles written for male actors'
India, Oct. 9 -- Ageing, both on screen and off, continues to be a big deal for actors. For years, debate has raged around male actors romancing female actors who are much younger.
But Chitrangda Singh feels there is a more practical way of looking at it: "This pressure to not age exists for everybody. All said and done, it is a visual medium." The actor is currently filming Battle of Galwan opposite Salman Khan and fans have praised the film's age-appropriate casting.
"If you are playing a 70-year-old, you should look like it, if you want to be cast as a 30-year-old, you have to be able to pull that off. Akki (Akshay Kumar), for example, works on his fitness and watches what he eats," she explains.
The 49-year-old does acknowledge, "Of course, there is more flexibility for male actors as opposed to a role written for a female actor. Look at (Hollywood actors like) Nicole Kidman and Demi Moore, everybody is trying to look young because you have to."
However, Chitrangda goes on to reflect about how things have changed in the industry, in turn, freeing female actors from having shelf life. "The times have changed so much. Actors like Vidya (Balan) and Kareena (Kapoor Khan) are doing so much amazing work. They hold so much screen presence, and roles are being written for them," she says.
"At the end of the day, you're selling a story and that needs to be believable. I don't think there's any bias there. They drive the film and the market, they bring the money, there is so much more to it," the actor concludes....
