'There is always room for romance in Hindi cinema'
India, Sept. 3 -- Romance is the flavour of the season for Bollywood this year, especially after the success of Saiyaara. Actor Akshay Oberoi is excited to return to this genre after a long time with his next, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. Ask about the revival of loves stories on screen and he says, "I feel there is always room for romance in Hindi cinema. You just need the right reminder."
Reflecting on Saiyaara's impact, he says, "It shows that you don't need a big tent-pole action film with big stars to run, you can make a romantic film and it will work too. It's a reminder that we should focus on good content and make stories from our hearts."
While he is happy coming back to romcoms, he reveals why he took a sabbatical from them earlier. "I walked away because certain things weren't shaping up. I was looking for a way for the industry to take me seriously as an actor. So, I started doing offbeat films. But now I am back to the mainstream genre after Fighter (2024), doing films with bigger stars and directors. It has led me to quintessentially romantic, family entertainers," he says.
Recently, there were rumours of Akshay making his international debut, and the actor confirms to us that it is in the pipeline. "Six months ago, I got an agent in the US and I have been auditioning. I grew up there, so the American accent is a part of my wheelhouse. I would love to explore American characters with Indian descent. Recently, I got closer to confirmation for something. Hopefully, all works out," he shares.
"Earlier, I used to be scared of diversifying. But as you grow, you want more challenges and get better in your craft. The best way to do that is to work in multiple languages and keep testing your boundaries. I am in that phase of my career," says Akshay, who is also doing a Kannada film Toxic: A Fairy Tale For Grown-Ups with actor Yash. "I married into a family of Kannadigas, and my entire family is super excited as they are all huge Yash fans. They are even taking me more seriously now ," he quips....
