'The real trophy was winning the tournament'
India, Oct. 2 -- India's thrilling Asia Cup win took an unexpected turn when the team refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council chief Mohsin Naqvi. Naqvi, who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, then reportedly took it away, sparking controversy. For Kuldeep Yadav, though, this incident did not overshadow the team's achievement.
"The real trophy was winning the tournament," the 30-year-old bowler tells us, adding, "It's always nice to hold the cup and celebrate in front of the fans, but we didn't let that take away from our joy. Beating strong teams like Pakistan and performing consistently was the main thing. The controversy was more outside noise."
This Asia Cup was a personal milestone for Kuldeep, who ended as the highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets: "As a bowler, you always want to contribute consistently to the team's success, and being the highest wicket-taker is very satisfying. I didn't go in thinking about personal records, though. But yes, it is rewarding to see how my efforts turned into results."
Being part of the golden era of Indian white-ball cricket also fills Kuldeep, who won the Champions Trophy earlier this year and the T20 World Cup 2024, with pride. "It feels special to be a part of this team. The talent we have, the way everyone takes responsibility, and the hunger to keep winning are really something unique. I think this era will inspire a lot of young cricketers in India," he concludes....
