'I plan to have fun on stage after being categorised all my life'
India, April 24 -- P
op star Shweta Shetty, known for '90s hits like Deewane to Deewane Hain, along with film tracks such as Rukmani Rukmani (Roja, 1994) and Mangta Hai Kya (Rangeela, 1995), is all set to perform in Mumbai next month.
"I plan to just enjoy myself on stage after being categorised all my life. From singers Reshma's Lambi Judaai to Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You, to R&B and hip-hop numbers, I am going to do it all."
Now 56, Shweta was in her 20s during the '90s. With her dusky complexion, curly hair, toned body and husky voice, she stood out in an industry that largely favoured light skin, straight hair and softer vocals. She recalls, "At shootings, the make-up artist would try to whiten me, and I would end up looking like a ghost. So I learnt how to do my own make-up."
Shweta adds, "When the album Johnny Joker came out in 1993, it was a break for people who did not dress in saris, because that was the look pop stars were expected to have those days. I was politely asked to wear decent clothes for my interviews, but I wore jeans and a tank top that they thought was too tight."
Ask why she left the country at the peak of her popularity to marry ex-husband Clemens Brandt and move to Germany, she reflects, "We artistes have a cold, stern, business-like exterior, but true artistes also have the most sensitive, breakable hearts," adding, "I fell in love, and unfortunately, he wasn't from Delhi or Mumbai; he was from Germany. So I had to change base. I was enjoying being a wife and was never ambitious."
The singer further shares that now, after her comeback, she is excited to collaborate with contemporary artistes like Shreya Ghoshal, Arijit Singh, Badshah and Yo Yo Honey Singh....
