Meet Punch (Panchi-kun), the Japanese macaque who became an internet sensation for refusing to let go of his plush 'surrogate mother.' Now, a new video from Japan's Ichikawa City Zoo showing Punch being dragged across his enclosure by an adult female has sparked fresh outrage online. Rejected by his biological mother shortly after birth in July 2025, Punch was given a soft toy to cling to, an instinct crucial for infant monkeys. While many viewers called the recent footage cruel, the zoo clarified on February 20 that such behaviour is normal within monkey troops.
