'Every actor has theright to choose theirroles'

shwak Singh has had a mixed run this year. He kicked off 2025 on a promising note with his web series alongside Jaideep Ahlawat, but his big-screen comeback, Tumko Meri Kasam, failed to strike a chord with audiences. Still, he remains optimistic. He recently wrapped up Gandhari with actor Taapsee Pannu and already has another web series lined up for release. In Gandhari, a female-led project, a space many A-list male actors tend to shy away from, Ishwak plays a significant role. Ask him about his decision to be part of it, and he offers a measured take: "Every actor has the right to choose their roles, and they can have a whole lot of reasons. For some, being number one on the call sheet is important. I don't know what those dynamics are. I'm also headlining projects, so I understand the difference between being number one and number two."
He adds, "Creatively, if you've got a larger arc, you get the biggest canvas, you not only grab more eyeballs but also get a chance to sharpen and showcase your craft. Sure, it comes with perks like higher remuneration, but also the risk of having all fingers, good and bad, pointed at you."
Would he have taken up Gandhari if he weren't in a leading position? "Absolutely. It's also about the director." But does the insecurity of playing second fiddle ever creep in? "I've seen actors with just four scenes become scene stealers on stage. Good writing and storytelling broaden your perspective. You begin to value the experience more than the hierarchy. That mindset keeps me from falling into that mousetrap - and in turn, it opens doors to working with bigger filmmakers," he explains....
