Sri Lanka, Dec. 29 -- The Kalutara prison is once again in the spotlight as news emerges of the third inmate death within a week. The latest victim, a 62-year-old resident of Panadura Modarawila, succumbed to a sudden illness at the Kalutara-Nagoda hospital on the afternoon of yesterday (28).

The deceased inmate had been detained on charges related to the possession of heroin. Following a deterioration in his health, he was rushed to the hospital but, unfortunately, could not be revived.

This marks the third reported death from Kalutara prison within the span of a week. The Kalutara North Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this latest death, acting on a complaint lodged by the prison department.
