Sri Lanka, March 23 -- President Maithripala Sirisena today handed over the proposal to declare the Theravada Tripitaka, the sacred scripture of Buddhists, as a UNESCO World Heritage to the UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer.

The ceremony was held at the Maha Maluwa of the Temple of the tooth relic in Kandy.

Chief Prelates of the 3 Nikaya's, the maha sanga, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasingha, Ministers and MP's graced the occasion.

During the ceremony today, the Maha Sangha appreciated the effort taken by President Sirisena to declare the Theravada Tripitaka as a World Heritage.
