Sri Lanka, Oct. 24 -- Japan's Princess Mako is set to forego a one-off million-dollar payment for giving up her royal status to wed a college classmate, local media said on Saturday, clearing the way for a marriage delayed for years by controversy over her fiance.
Japan's Princess Mako turned 30 on Saturday -- her final birthday as a member of the imperial family before she marries her commoner boyfriend next week.
Princess Mako has set her heart on marrying her university sweetheart, Kei Komuro. Neither rich nor well connected, Kei Komuro's mother reportedly borrowed money from her then fiance to pay for Kei Komuro's university education.
