Sri Lanka, June 24 -- The week beginning from today until 1 July has been declared as the Drug Prevention week.

This week was declared based on the International Drugs Day which falls on 26 June on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena.

Secretary to the President Udaya R. Seneviratne said that under this, it has been arranged to hold drug prevention programmes island wide.

He pointed out that as at present, approximately 11,000 persons addicted to drugs have been caught by the law and are being punished.

The President's Secretary also said that special drug raids will be carried out jointly with the intervention of the Police and the tri-forces within this week.
