Sri Lanka, Dec. 3 -- State Minister of Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna stated that no decision has been taken yet regarding the next steps to be taken regarding the gas cylinders currently being used in homes.

He was commenting on the suspension of the distribution and sale of domestic gas cylinders islandwide in the wake of the crisis.

The distribution of domestic gas cylinders was suspended due to the lack of ethyl mercaptan required to detect a gas leak.

In addition to the butane and propane components in LP gas cylinders, a chemical called ethyl mercaptan is added to detect a gas leak.

It emits a foul odor in the event of a gas leak and a cylinder must contain 14 units of ethyl mercaptan chemical.
