Mumbai, Feb. 27 -- The main opposition in Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), pushed for a motion in the assembly on Wednesday to honour freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on the occasion of his death anniversary. Assembly Speaker Nana Patole rejected the motion amid an uproar by BJP members of the legislative assembly (MLAs).

BJP legislator and former finance minister, Sudhir Mungantiwar, sought to move the motion and demanded that a resolution be passed by the assembly to honour Savarkar. However, the Congress -- a partner in the ruling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi -- has been critical of the move.
