New Delhi, Feb. 15 -- The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a circular ending adjournment in certain categories of cases, including bail and laid down new rules under which each lawyer to a case can seek adjournment only once and in no circumstance is a case to be adjourned consecutively on two occasions.

The drastic changes brought about by the new guidelines are in line with the thoughts recently shared by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud last month when he presented "adjournment culture" as a challenge to the legal system and spoke of emerging into a "culture of professionalism".

"Circulating letters for adjournment in fresh and regular hearing matters is not permitted," the circular said.
