New Delhi, May 6 -- The Supreme Court has widened the scope of its ongoing scrutiny of disability rights, directing eight national law universities (NLUs) to undertake a detailed, structured assessment of how the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 is being implemented across all states and Union territories. A bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta made it clear that the exercise must go beyond a surface-level audit and instead involve a "substantive evaluation" of compliance with statutory mandates, including the creation of institutional mechanisms, enforcement of rights and accessibility measures.
