India, March 12 -- A high-level selection committee, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is likely to meet on March 14 to pick a successor to election commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey, who retired on February 15. The panel may also fill the second vacancy created by the surprise resignation of Arun Goel as election commissioner on Saturday, officials said. While the selection panel was earlier slated to meet on March 15, some of its participants have been sounded out that it will be held around noon on March 14, officials said. In a surprise move, Goel stepped down on Saturday, just days before the Election Commission of India (ECI) is expected to announce the schedule for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to be held in April-May. A 1985-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Punjab cadre, Goel joined the poll body in November 2022 and his tenure was to last till December 5, 2027. P12...
