Shillong, March 11 -- Two people died in police firing during a curfew in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district on Tuesday, officers said, as tensions escalated over the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, prompting a 48-hour curfew extension and a call for an Army flag march. Meanwhile, civil society activists urged the Meghalaya government to postpone the council election schedule until legal clarity emerges on the controversial poll eligibility rules, which stipulate that only Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates may contest the April 10 GHADC election.
