New Delhi, April 29 -- Indian spice mixes and other foods have been banned in Singapore, Hong Kong and now, the European Union, due to the presence of Ethylene Oxide, a carcinogenic chemical. Ethylene Oxide is sprayed to control microbes and for food to last longer. In the EU, there's a permissible limit, found exceeded. Like the Azo dyes crisis, India is likely to fix what is as much a global economic problem as an image problem.

For Indians, the big question is: what exactly are we ourselves eating? Most of us buy big brand foods with a level of trust. But if we can export contaminated foods to the European Union, we clearly don't have much control over food safety here either.
