SHIMLA, March 5 -- The Himachal Pradesh government on Monday launched a welfare scheme that provides an allowance of Rs. 1,500 per month to all women over 18 years under the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh-Sammaan Nidhi Yojana, fulfilling one of its poll promises.

"The scheme reflects the government's sensitivity towards women and the money will aid in their financial and social upliftment," chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said in a media briefing.

The government started the first phase of the scheme from February 1 by providing the allowance to all women in the Lahaul and Spiti district and women above 60 years.

It will be rolled across the state from April.
