New Delhi, Aug. 10 -- When a controversy exploded over a cartoon depicting BR Ambedkar in May 2012, freedom of speech quickly became the fulcrum of the row. A large section of the commentators berated Dalit leaders for taking offence at the cartoon that showed Jawaharlal Nehru with a whip, egging on Ambedkar riding a snail, and said the eventual withdrawal of the cartoon was a defeat of free speech and innovative pedagogy.
