Crew of Apollo 13 safely returns after perilous mission
India, April 18 -- Samoan girls danced and a Navy band played "The Age of Aquarius", a song from the hippie musical Hair, as the three astronauts of the ill-fated Apollo 13 stepped on to the aircraft carrier after they had been picked up from the ocean by helicopter on April 17, 1970.
It was a warm and affectionate welcome that Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert got after the five-day ordeal they had in the bleak and cold lunar lander "Aquarius' after the service module had been crippled by an oxygen leak and an explosion. At 10.13 pm (IST) they said goodbye to Aquarius, which had been their lifeboat all the time as anxious millions down on earth were speculating on their safety and safe return.
