Kanpur, July 8 -- Self-styled preacher Suraj Pal, better known as "Bhole Baba", drew from his experience as a constable in the Uttar Pradesh Police to establish a formidable security apparatus as his popularity grew over the years, officials privy to the ongoing investigation said.

This three-tier apparatus came to include a specially-trained unit of 100 personnel whom he called commandos, or the "Garud warriors" dressed in black, the next layer was formed of a 5,000-strong team of sevadars (volunteers) called the Narayani Sena identified by their pink uniforms, followed by a team of 30 individuals who formed the "Harihar Sena", clad in brown uniforms.

Pal was the "commander-in-chief" of these units.
