Goa, Oct. 4 -- Strong opposition has erupted in Verem after locals noticed preparations to install anchors in the Mandovi river to facilitate casino boat operations. The proposed site lies in an ecologically sensitive stretch where traditional fishermen harvest tisryos (clams), a key source of livelihood and a staple of local cuisine.

Concerned residents convened a meeting with Saligao MLA Kedar Naik to voice their objections. Villagers expressed fears that anchoring casino vessels would damage the clam-rich riverbed and deprive fishermen of their traditional occupation. They also highlighted ongoing concerns over river pollution, navigational hazards, and encroachment on areas reserved for community fishing.
